I am so honoured to be accepted as a finalist in the inaugural Hill Painting Prize along side so many worthy recipients. It will be a wonderful celebration of the natural landscapes, urban spaces and man made environments of the Blue Mountains, captured through the medium of painting.
Opening on the 7th August, this exhibition will be on show till the 20th September at The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre Gallery, Katoomba.
I worked with watercolour and gouache on primed vintage sheet music. The process involved repeated layering of watercolour washes so the colour pooled on the paper.Following this before drying, I lay crumbled or stretched plastic wrap, strategically, and left it weighted or open to dry in part or fully, before lifting and reapplying to another area or overlapping. In this way the translucent nature of watercolour was utilised to build layers of colour and texture.
Following this process I used a series of brush marks, as rhythmic dashes, to build the surface. in some areas this was accented with gouache details or, as in the case of the clouds in the sky, returning to the layering technique uses before.
