* Finalist in the Hill Painting Prize, Katoomba , 2026
For indeterminable generations, untold eyes have gazed across these ancient rocks, past the ridges and plateaus toward Megalong Valley, feeling a deep, unspoken music within. Inspired by the landscape’s rhythm, the chorus of birds, and my own emotional connection, I layered watercolor and gouache onto primed pages of vintage sheet music—translating the melodies of the earth into brushstrokes.
Oil on canvas, begun plein air and completed in the studio. A view from a friends’ property at Crudine, just out of Mudgee. After not painting in oils for years I felt very comfortable and inspired to work more in this media.
Although not for sale ( because my husband loves it so much hanging in our bedroom), we would consider an offer it is touches your heart.

There is something majestic about afternoon light on rich red rocks. Standing looking out at the landscape with big skies is something I find fills my mind with awe and music. In working on this piece on and off since my last visit to Mutawintji, I found the meditative brush marks and interplay of rust and watercolour were like a song of healing to my heart. The rust printing came first, using items from Eldee Station and walks around the fringes of Silverton. Like history these rust marks and vintage violin music sheets leave tracks, and marks, layering memories. The majority of my artwork is linked to details and moments in the landscape. As a mark maker and selective scavenger, I paint, print, collage, make paper, leave and fold. As a visual artist I experience my environment through, not only my eyes, but all my senses. I love to play with details and collect ephemera that become inspiration and part of the works I create.
Antrim is a county in Northern Ireland with a stunning coastline. My maternal grandparents were big influences in my life. My grandfather migrated to Australia from Belfast at the turn of the 20thC. Whilst my grandmother was the daughter of a Northern Irishman, from Enniskillen, so Northern Ireland is still a very special place for our family. The from cover of this book seemed very fit for purpose. The legacy of travelling to places generations past have walked is very enriching for me, it links me emotionally with their lives.
A Valse is a waltz, and this vintage sheet of music is from Sphinx Valse. My grandfather collected records and introduced his granddaughters to 'Peter and the wolf' and classic favourites which we would dress up and dance to when we visited in the school, holidays. Music was a large part of family life, my parents would play records often in our home. Till late in life my beloved Aunty Liz attended concerts and the ballet with a subscription started in the 1940s.

Although her first degree and career was in chemistry, my other's great love of literature, history and exploring different cultures was always part of family discussions. As travel was her passion, choosing these 2 images from her collection of black and white photographs fitted perfectly on this book cover. Switzerland's pristine beauty was often talked about when family got together to share slide nights or stories of adventures in the 1950s and 1960s.
My parents took us to Switzerland in the '70s and I travelled there with my husband in 2014, then recently with my husband, daughter and son in law. It is still as beautiful as these old images showed.

Hand Coloured linoprint on mulberry paper 46 × 30cm
Often seen as a lovely cheerful flower, through my childhood sunflowers were key to the work my father did at the CSIRO. 'Good oil' is part of my major artwork 'Seeds of science'. The sunflowers my father and the fellow scientists at the Griffith research station developed were primarily for good sunflower oil production used in culinarily areas. My hand cut and pulled Lino print has been hand coloured in pencil.

Hand coloured lino print on Japanese Kozo paper
One aspect of living in the Blue Mountains, is the juxtaposition of beautiful Australian bush, and the fear of fire. The bush needs to be refreshed and reborn through this process of fire, yet it can threaten our homes and life. As a metaphor in my life we are reborn through suffering that can become beauty.
This work was a commission following my 2021 exhibition ‘Moments Observed’.

When l think of the question, who do you think l am? I think firstly of Colin McMahon's "I Am" painting, so majestic and powerful in the National Gallery Canberra. For me that links well to the concept of an eternal trinity. It is impossible to separate Jesus from Father and Holy Spirit. Throughout the Bible God is revealed as trinity, using pronouns of us, we and our. Jesus is referred to as the alpha and omega in Revelations 21:13 so in this I envisaged an eternal infinity symbol, how Jesus was always and always is.
My family migrated with hope for a life in Australia that would be better than the one they saw for themselves in the UK. My maternal grandfather came from Belfast at the turn of the 20th century as a small boy andthis image is from a photograph he took. My father was British arriving in 1960 as a research scientist (along with his wife, my mother who was from Australia) who migrated under the £10 scheme of that time. Their stories and family still in the UK are part of my history. Like many others, the image of the ships leaving for adventure across the world was imbued with excitement and sadness as the streamers that held a physical link, broke as the ship set sail.
I recently discovered this photo of my eccentric Great aunt Eva. Her posture and hat reminded me of literature my mother introduced me to and art my father loved. In addition, Eva ran a nursery school in the 1920s - 1950s at Dee Why. She loved to write us letters and add her own drawn pictures when my sisters and I were children. She is one of the only other teachers I know of in my family and was devoted to following student progress. I loved the way in this image she was outside in the garden, reading in a classic pose and included a section from one of her teaching books.
